Happy Valentines Day Folks,

Below is the 2nd edition of the 2012 Comprehensive International Archaeology/Anthropology Field School Directory. Since there are already close to 100 field schools listed I am sending this 2nd edition out a bit early. If you are still stumped on what to get your significant other for this cultural holiday print out this list of Field Schools! It is sure to bring a sparkle to their eye :-) And if you are pissing and moaning about a trumped up holiday which forces us to spend waaaaay to much on cheap cards and baubles just remember that in your heart you are an anthropologist, eh? Right? I thought so. So quit your whining and have a little fun with the indigenous customs of the culture your are living in and studying everyday :-) Seriously, you can be a bit to uptight sometimes ;-) relax, take it easy. Watch, Observe, Enjoy (and make witty comments about the locals). And ready yourself for finding an awesome field school!

If your institutions program is not included yet be sure to forward the relevant information below to the powers that be.

If you are just getting started in your career in archaeology/anthropology it is important to realize that a field school is imperative! So find a great one and have the best experience of your life! You will make friends and professional contacts that will last throughout your entire career. You will also have the option to be working on some of the most interesting sites that are currently active anywhere in the world.

The deadline for inclusion in the next edition of the 2012 Comprehensive Archaeology/Anthropology Field School Directory is some random day near the end of February. Or around then. Give or take a few days. But be prompt. You can view the current entries in the attached PDF with links to each field school or at http://www.shovelbums.org. It helps everyone out if you forward the attached PDF which lists all the current field schools to your relevant personal network. If you are on facebook, Google+ or one of the last seven people on MySpace feel free to add a link to the field schools. ShovelBums has has always worked by word of mouth (and the handy forward button) so your help is appreciated!

NOTE (seriously, I would love to hear from you so I can add some new stuff, but then again maybe these e-mails just go into the vacuum of internet space... :-): If you are a student who has found a field school through ShovelBums drop me a note and tell me how that experience has positively effected your career (and let me know if I can use that in a future mailing). Because the field schools in this directory go out by e-mail* to all 15,000+ members of Shovel Bums LLC as well as being posted on www.ShovelBums.org, one of the most heavily trafficked sites by archaeology students from around the world. Instead of students having to find your announcement somewhere on the web, flooding e-mail lists with multiple announcements, or students trying to find your field school in print, your field school goes directly to your target audience in an easy to share e-mail. You can be sure that if one of the 15,000 members is not the right one for your field school, they likely have a friend who is! Because the 2012 Comprehensive Anthropology/Archaeology Field Schools Directory goes out as an e-mail, it is easy for a recipient to forward your announcement on to the interested party.

Shovelbums is a wonderful resource for advertising academic field schools.   We are a small college in North Carolina, and by using Shovelbums we were able to expand our reach dramatically and recruit students from all over the country. In addition to increasing our number of participants, this also helped us to be more selective and to increase the quality of the students. We receive inquiries for the field school from other online sites as well, but students definitely seem drawn to the Shovelbums site and they are the source of most of our non-local contacts.

Prior to websites, such as ShovelBums, we had to mail out field school flyers to anthropology departments around the country and have them post these around their department. With the founding of ShovelBums it makes it much easier to reach a wider range of not only students, but also non-students that are interested in attending a field school. We always ask individuals how they found out about our event when they contact us requesting additional information and at least 50% say that they found our listing on your website. As such, ShovelBums has obviously helped us a great deal in making initial contact with potential field school participants.
Since many field schools advertise their events through ShovelBums I think it allows students/participants to use a single source to locate and compare potential field schools. As a result, the site serves as an important source for perspective field school participants. ShovelBums allow participants to be smart, well informed shoppers.
Lastly, unlike other sources of advertisement that we use, ShovelBums enables us to provide much more detailed information about our field school. This is really important for potential field school participants. We have found that because they are investing their hard earned money (or Mom and Dad's) and several weeks of their life on a field school, that they want to obtain as much information as they can about the event before they commit.

So who are these "Shovel Bums" and why are they good to reach?

I founded ShovelBums LLC in 1999 as a niche resource for the archaeology and CRM community focusing exclusively on professional job advertisements. Because of the narrow focus of ShovelBums it grew quickly to have the worlds largest professional membership of archaeologists & CRMers. I recognized that many ShovelBums members are the students who read their e-mail everyday while preparing for a future in archaeology, anthropology, or CRM and who understood that a field school is critical to their success in this career. To facilitate these student's education I expanded ShovelBums in 2004 to include the popular annual Comprehensive Archaeology/Anthropology Field Schools Directory.

The great thing about ShovelBums having 14,000 members is that even if the student or professor who reads your advertisement is not your target they likely know a friend or student who is. It is worth repeating: because the 2012 Comprehensive Anthropology/Archaeology Field Schools Directory goes out as an e-mail it is easy for the recipient to forward the announcement on to the person they know who will be perfect for your field school!

$25 listing Fee (Is your project broke? Few worries, read on)

There is a non-optional $25 fee* for each listing in the ShovelBums.org directory. It has been suggested to me by some of the schools that use this service that I should raise the fee to $50 because of the value it ads (I have to admit being able to update 15,000+ interested members twice every month about your field school opportunity is a pretty darn good bargain). For 2012 I am keeping it at $25. HOWEVER if you are from an institution that cannot afford the fee, do not hesitate to submit your field school anyway - I WILL INCLUDE IT. Just drop me a note so I know. My (bad business) philosophy is that it is more important for the students to know where the field schools are then to prevent any institution from using the extensive ShovelBums field school directory service. This might be bad for business, but it is good for the students. And the students are what it is all about. If you or your institutions can pay, do the right thing, it helps to support the ShovelBums service that your students rely on.

Why do I charge a fee? I run Shovel Bums LLC independently without the support of any institution. I cover all expenses out of pocket, and I use the proceeds from this directory to keep ShovelBums a valuable part of your student's employment toolkit as they pursue a career in archaeology, anthropology, or CRM (and it is useful for buying food for my three kids and wife :-).

ERM is seeking an Archaeological Principal Investigator to join our global consulting firm as part of our cultural resources team. Based in St. Paul, MN, the successful candidate must be a Secretary of the Interior-qualified Principal Investigator in Archaeology capable of leading projects throughout the U.S. The position includes business development, agency consultation, client advisory services, fieldwork, supervisory duties, research, and writing.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Expand ERM's client base for cultural resources management in the region through business development.

- Perform and oversee research at various State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO), related facilities, and on-line.

- Perform Area of Potential Effect (APE) structure surveys under the guidance of ERM's architectural historian.

- Perform and supervise Phase I, II, and III archaeological fieldwork and report on results.

- Contribute to preparing EAs/EISs and associated management plans in compliance with NEPA.

- Perform construction monitoring and produce appropriate reports.
Prepare submittals for agency review.

- Negotiate with state and federal agencies in cases of disagreement with recommended findings, and for difficult cases.

- Assist with Tribal consultation, including escorting tribal representatives to visit project sites.

- Perform local consultations.

- Respond to public comments.

- Provide additional information as requested by reviewing agencies, Tribes, local governments, and members of public.

- Represent ERM through communications and at meetings with state, federal, and local agencies.

- Communicate regularly with clients via email, meetings, and phone conferences.

- Creatively solve problems to optimize a client-favorable outcome.

- Perform Phase I Environmental Site Assessments per ASTM Standard.

- Collect field data for natural resources compliance submittals.

- Track the progress of numerous telecommunications projects through the entire compliance process.

- Prepare NEPA-type documents for federal and/or state agencies, and/or providing strategic-level IAP support

REQUIREMENTS:

- Master's degree in Archaeology or Anthropology with a focus in Archaeology required; meeting the Secretary of Interior requirements.

- Meet the Secretary of the Interior's Standards to perform duties for Section 106 and NEPA compliance, pertaining to FCC-related undertakings.

- Minimum 4 years of experience, with at least 2 years of supervisory experience.

- Minimum 1 year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archaeological research, administration or management.

- Ability to carry research to completion.

- Proven business development abilities.

- Hold or be able to obtain a permit to work on state and public lands in numerous states.

- Ability to work in the field 25-50% of the time. Extensive travel is required.

- Excellent communication and computer skills.

- Ability to work within a team as well as independently.

- Ability to succeed in a fast-paced consulting environment, manage budgets, develop proposals, handle multiple project assignments, meet strict deadlines, and travel to client facilities.

The Office of Contract Archeology, University of New Mexico is seeking an experienced GIS Analyst with an archeological background to work in our Albuquerque office. This is a full-time benefitted position with salary negotiable depending upon education and experience.

Position Summary
Under general supervision, provides and coordinates complex research/data analysis, systems design, programming, and support of computer-based GIS/GPS (Geographic Information Systems/Global Positioning Systems) mapping and related statistical software. Provides technical leadership and guidance to other archeologists and support staff.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree with 1 to 3 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of GPS and total station data collection techniques including use of Trimble, Topcon and
similar professional equipment.
Demonstrated proficiency in drafting and drawing skills and knowledge of cartographic techniques, and
map reading.
Knowledge and proficiency in using software including MS Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, ArcGIS,
and AutoCAD.
Demonstrated proficiency in compiling and integrating geospatial data from a wide variety of sources-
Web, GPS, EDM, field maps, and digitizer--into publishable maps for technical reports.
Ability to use aerial orthophotographs.
Knowledge and experience of archeological fieldwork methods for both survey and excavation.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Experience with report production.
Familiarity with Terra Sync and ArcPad.
Proficiency in Web design.

The successful candidate will assist the Historical Archaeology Program Manager in proposal preparation; development and implementation of research designs and treatment plans; supervising field and laboratory staff; technical report writing; and maintaining project schedules and budgets.

Required Skills:

Applicant should have experience directing investigations at historic period sites, performing archival research, preparing technical reports, and have an interest in 19th and 20th century research issues and material culture. Experience in urban archaeology, analysis of historical materials, and use of Harris Matrix recording system desired. Qualifications in architectural history and/or Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification a plus. Must have prior supervisory experience, a strong working knowledge of the regulatory setting, and proven written and oral communication skills. Must demonstrate a strong work ethic, reliability, good communication skills, and ability to manage multiple projects. This person will function as a leader and integral team member.

Education/Experience:

M.A. or Ph.D. degree in history, historical archaeology, or related field required. Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) certification preferred. Minimum of 5 years of supervisory or management experience in CRM.

[ShovelBums.Org] Archaeological Field Technician (2) positions (Montpelier Station, VA)

The Montpelier Foundation is seeking applications for two full-time archaeological technician positions with benefits (health insurance, retirement, vacation, and sick leave). The position is provisionally for one year, with extension beyond this dependent upon the acquisition of further grants.

Over the next two seasons we will be conducting excavations at several early 19^th-century slave quarter sites. The excavation and analysis of these sites is part of a larger NEH-funded project to examine the enslaved community at Montpelier and include an important teaching component with the research program (university field schools and multiple week-long adult training programs). During these programs, staff will take an active role in teaching field school students and volunteers archaeological techniques while maintaining a rigorous work schedule and the highest standards of record keeping.

Early 19^th-century Quarter for Enslaved Field Workers (2012 and 2013)

Excavation of a set of slave quarters below the Montpelier Visitor Center. Similar to other slave quarters excavated at Montpelier over the past two years, these quarters were abandoned in 1844 but unlike the others were allowed to decay in placeresulting in an incredible array of abandonment strata and intact occupation strata. In addition, this set of quarters has never been plowed.

Survey of Montpelier Property

We will be continuing surveys of the property looking for late-18^th and early-19^th-century plantation sites (slave quarters and work areas) as well as any other historic sites located on the property. These investigations will involve Phase I and limited Phase II investigations.

For applications, please send a cover letter detailing your level of archaeological experience as it applies to 18th and 19^th-century archaeological sites and the identification of historical material culture, a resume, and a list of references. Candidates must have a bachelors degree (BA, BS) in Anthropology or a related field, and be able to effectively communicate archaeological techniques to untrained volunteers, students, and visitors. The successful candidate should also have participated in a recognized archaeological field school and have at least one to two years of experience in full-time archaeological field work.

Housing is available at Montpelier. Salary is $12.00 per hour with a $1.00 per hour raise after a 6-month review.

The Eldorado National Forest will soon be filling temporary (not to exceed 1039 hours), full-time ARCHEOLOGICAL TECHNICIAN, Crew Leader GS-0102-07 positions located on the Georgetown Ranger District in Georgetown CA and Amador Ranger District, Pioneer, CA. The Eldorado National Forest is recognized as a desirable place to work because of its location in the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains. Elevations range from 2000 ft in the foothills to more than 10,000 along the Sierra Crest. A Mediterranean climate extends over most of the Forest, with warm, dry summers, and cold, wet winters. Average precipitation ranges from 40 to 70 inches, occurring mainly from October to April. There is significant snowfall above 3000 feet elevation. The Forest and surrounding communities offer a wide variety of recreational activities. There are lakes, reservoirs, several cross-country and downhill ski areas, two unique wilderness areas, over 40 developed campgrounds, several resort areas, golf courses, and outstanding local wineries and fruit orchards. Opportunities abound for water skiing, white water sports (Class II to Class V), mountain biking, OHV travel, rock climbing, fishing, hunting and hiking. Local community theatres offer stage plays and a variety of musical entertainment. Although El Dorado County makes up the largest segment of the Forest, portions of Alpine, Amador, and Placer counties lie within the Forest Boundary. In close proximity to the forest are the communities of South Lake Tahoe and Sacramento, which offer additional recreational and cultural activities including professional and semi-professional sports.

Knowledge of historic and prehistoric cultural resources specific to the western Central Sierra Region also required. Candidates must be able to travel, conduct fieldwork for long hours in rugged terrain and, at times, inclement weather and high altitudes and be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 lbs.
The Crew Leader will report to the District Archaeologist and is expected to work independently and as leader of a crew, maintains records and delegates responsibilities to crew members while varifying that work is complete and according to current acceptable standards.
Additional duties pertaining to the GS-7 level include:

Research reference materials, interview sources; collect and provide initial interpretation of artifacts and features discovered during cultural resource surveys.
Assist in site significance and effects analysis and other duties as assigned.
Prepare cultural resource survey reports.
GIS project data management and analysis including strong GIS skills and experience with ArcGIS software and geodatabases.

These are temporary hourly positions with qualified candidates working 40-50 hrs/week, depending on workload. Time worked in excess of 40 hrs/week will be compensated at time and a half. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

1.) Conduct archaeological field work under the supervision of a Crew Chief(s) and/or Field Director.
2.) Conduct archaeological survey, field testing, including shovel test pits and excavation units, data recovery, and associated field recording, including completion of field forms, digital photography and in-field mapping.
3.) Assist with GPS data collection in the field. Knowledge of Trimble Handheld GeoXT GPS units and TerraSync Software is a plus.
4.) Contribute to archaeological office and lab work, as needed.

Qualifications:

1.) Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or closely related field.
2.) Completion of accredited field school or equivalent experience.
3.) Ability to conduct field work in inclement weather and/or rugged terrain, for long hours and ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
4.) Current driver's license.

Paleo Solutions is currently seeking full-time and part-time Paleontology and Archaeology Field Technicians. We are a small woman owned firm located in LA County currently looking to expand our staff. We are accepting resumes from qualified individuals who have field experience in central and southern California and who are working towards or have a Bachelor's or Masters degree in Paleontology, Geology, and other related fields (haven taken a soils or stratigraphy course is a plus) for the Paleontology positions, or a Bachelor's or Master's in Anthropology/Archaeology. Pay will be based on the applicant's experience and qualifications. We are growing rapidly and other positions besides field technicians will be needed.

If you have Los Angeles County, Riverside County, San Bernardino County, and Kern County experience this is also a bonus. We have on-going projects in all areas.

The technician must have a valid driver's license, good driving record, and their own mode of transportation (4WD a plus!). Must be physically fit to perform long hours of field monitoring, salvaging and/or surveying. Most fieldwork will be conducted in and around southern and eastern California. When required to be away from our office we will pay for hotel and reimburse for food receipts.

We are seeking Archaeological Field Technicians for the 2012 field season for our Pasadena, California office. Anticipated fieldwork will occur throughout southern California, including active U.S. military facilities. These are temporary, hourly positions and the candidate will typically work 40 hours per week depending on workload. Some projects include overtime hours or prevailing wage rates. When project travel is required, per diem ($46/day or current federal rate), hotel room accommodations, and field vehicles are provided. Project travel time is paid. Pay rate will be based on individual qualifications and experience.

Due to the nature of seasonal fieldwork, candidates local to southern California are strongly preferred.

Responsibilities:
Work in the field under the supervision of Crew Chiefs in the performance of archaeological fieldwork;
Conduct archaeological survey, testing, data recovery, and/or construction monitoring;
Document field methods and results using field forms, digital photography, and sketches;
Contribute to team efforts during cultural resources field and lab work;
Take initiative, resolving problems, and creating improved procedures to assure tasks are completed in the most effective manner; and
Assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using Trimble units (knowledge of ArcPad or TerraSync is a plus).

Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field.
Participation in an accredited field school or equivalent experience.
Six months experience working as a field archeologist in southern California.
Experience with the application of standard archaeological survey and excavation techniques.
Ability to travel and be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather conditions, often in rugged terrain, and be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.

The Office of Contract Archeology, University of New Mexico is seeking qualified Senior Archeologists (Project Directors) for survey and excavation fieldwork on different projects in New Mexico and portions of adjacent states of Colorado, Arizona, and Texas. These are full-time benefitted positions with salary ranging from $41,454.00 to $60,881.00 per annum depending upon education and experience.

Position Summary
Under indirect supervision, oversees and coordinates the day-to-day activities of archeological contract projects. Provides technical leadership and guidance to other archeologists and support staff. Performs independent research and supervises multidisciplinary archeological field and laboratory research.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in Anthropology (Archeology emphasis) with 1 to 3 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Must hold or be able to obtain valid New Mexico Driver's License; ability to meet minimum requirements for Local/State/Federal Archeological permits.

Preferred Qualifications
Expertise and experience in one or more of the following specialties:
Lithic Analysis
Geoarcheology
Paleobotanical Analysis
Demonstrated ability to design and manage multiple crew archeological survey and excavation projects.
Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and write technical reports and popular articles
summarizing results of research.
Proficiency in use of Total Station and GPS instrumentation.
Proficiency in use of MS Office software (MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and Access Databases.
Good people skills and management ability.
Experience conducting archeological survey and excavation in the American Southwest with an emphasis in
New Mexico. Permittable as Project Director and Field Supervisor for State of New Mexico, National Forest
Service, and BLM lands.
Ability to prepare and deliver speeches, presentations, and lectures to professional and public audiences.

M.S. or M.A. in Anthropology or Archaeology, or a related field, is strongly preferred. Demonstrated prior management experience is strongly preferred.
Selected candidate will be team-oriented, while able to work independently, and willing to assume fiscal and scheduling responsibilities for projects of all sizes and scopes. Fieldwork and travel are not significant components of this job.

Statistical Research, Inc. (SRI), a multidisciplinary cultural resources consulting firm, has one temporary full-time, hourly field technician position available immediately for an ongoing archaeological survey in southern California with most of the fieldwork taking place in eastern San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. The qualified candidate should possess, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and have completed an accredited archaeological field school. Candidates must also have a minimum of 1–2 years of survey experience in southern California and be able to recognize prehistoric and historical-period cultural resources. Candidates must be familiar with operating Trimble GPS units and ArcPad GPS software and know how to interpret USGS topographic quadrangles and aerial photographs. Candidates must have strong writing skills and have experience completing California DPR site recording forms and creating site sketch maps. Candidates should also be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (i.e., extreme heat), have good organizational skills, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn and execute new tasks.

The pay rate for this position is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Food allowance and lodging will be provided following Caltrans Travel and Expense Guide.

Job Description:

Fieldwork for the successful candidate is anticipated to begin Monday, February 6, and will last approximately 5 weeks.

Chambers Group provides environmental planning, regulatory permitting, technical studies that evaluate impacts to biological resources, cultural resources, air quality and noise analyses, and construction mitigation monitoring.

We have an immediate need for an Senior Cultural Manager based out of our Santa Ana/Redlands office. The position reports to the Director Cultural Resources. This full-time position will entail project management, including management of budget, staff, and schedule; preparation of technical reports; analysis of project impacts on archaeological resources under NEPA, CEQA, and NHPA; coordination with local, state, and federal agencies, and mentoring of junior-level staff.

Responsibilities:

· Supervise and conduct archaeological surveys, evaluations and data recovery efforts

· Develop and execute archaeological research designs

· Prepare proposals, including the development of cultural resource investigation scopes of work and associated budgets and schedules

· Manage cultural resources investigations

· Demonstrated ability to manage projects from creation to completion. The ability to write and produce professional quality reports is essential.

· A minimum of 5-6 years of supervisory experience is necessary

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

· Experience in California cultural resources management with a working command of federal and state cultural resources statutes

· Operational knowledge of the prehistory and history of California and the Southwest

· Experience in the inventory and evaluation of prehistoric and historic archaeological resources

· Demonstrated writing and research abilities

· Ability to use computer hardware, software, and other related information technologies for extended periods on a daily basis

· Knowledge of GPS data collection equipment

The ideal candidate must interact with people at all levels and communicate effectively. Willingness to assist with interdisciplinary duties that may be needed to deliver quality services on schedule. Ability to handle projects in a variety of geographic settings and in multiple jurisdictions.

Desired qualification:

The successful candidate will have a M.A. or M.S. degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field. Will have a minimum of five years of field experience with consulting firms, including at least two years of project management experience. Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) status is desirable. A record of professional research and publication will be favorably viewed.

We are seeking an Archaeologist to lead field crews and support office efforts in our growing Bismarck, North Dakota office. Bismarck is a growing western city offering unrivaled economic stability, affordable housing, and access to abundant outdoors activities. This is a regular, full-time hourly position with the potential for advancement. We offer an informal, team-oriented work environment, competitive wages, and a competitive benefits package, including an employee stock ownership plan (retirement).

Responsibilities (but not limited to):

Fieldwork (survey, site recording, testing, monitoring, and data recovery) and/or supervising field crews;
Leadership (problem solving, decision making, team building, and conflict resolution);
Professional report and site form preparation, research, and literature reviews;
Adherence to protocol;
Data QA/QC, organization, tracking; and
Field GPS data collection using Trimble units.

Qualifications:

A positive, resourceful, motivated, and detail-oriented individual with the following attributes:

A Bachelor's Degree in anthropology or a closely related field (at a minimum)
Experience in the northern Plains, Rocky Mountains, or Great Lakes region

Previous field supervisory experience
Ability to be listed on federal and/or state permits
Effective communication skills
Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for long hours (sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and at high altitudes) and to carry equipment weighing up to 40 pounds
