RE: [phono-tx] Re: toddlers under age 2

Rosie,

RE: what is a good source for core vocabulary?

The term *core vocabulary* is used in at least three SLP senses and in foreign/second language teaching.

1. Core Vocabulary
This usually means a small core vocabulary of powerful, functional words that are early word targets for late talkers, including children with CAS.

2. Core Vocabulary Therapy
This is a phonological therapy approach developed by Barbara Dodd and her colleagues intended specifically for children with Inconsistent Deviant Phonological disorder (aka Inconsistent Speech Disorder) in Dodd's classification system, or high token-to-token variability. It also uses powerful words (powerful for the child) but in a different way. In Core Vocabulary Therapy intervention focuses on consistency of production of fifty carefully selected treatment words.

3. Core Vocabulary in AAC
This is different again, and consists of frequently used *messaging* words. It involves the most frequently used words in typical communication. http://ajslp.asha.org/cgi/content/abstract/10/1/81

4. The term core vocabulary is also used in ESL/EFL/TESOL circles, for example Alan Beale's Core Vocabulary.
