Re: [phono-tx] AAC and unintelligible toddlers - PARENT BROCHURES?

Dear Samantha,

>
> Yes please share your info Suzanne - I love the part you say about "It is much harder to play and sign than to talk and sign." Love the article also Sharon. What do both of you think about encouraging sign for children without suspected CAS but severe SSD (of any kind) who are largely unintelligible, and children with expressive language delay who have little-no words?
>

I'll send my handout to you privately since it doesn't look like there is a huge demand and much of it is similar to Sharon's. In response to your question: yes, I do encourage and argue for signing with many children with expressive or/and receptive language difficulties. Parents' reactions to it are quite varied. My greatest success with signing has been with CAS children who learned quite quickly and latched on to the signing. That convinced the parents ... and the children communicating presented a huge relieve for the whole family. If the signing is not led by the children, many parents do not muster the necessary persistence for the slower learning children. But those who do, are grateful that they did.

Susanne
