You say you only hear the nasality on occasion. I wouldn try to see if there are specific circumstances that accompany the nasality such as when he talks faster or slower or louder or softer. It's easy to miss it in soft or fast speech. If it only happens on slow speech or when he tries to talk louder then he may have a case of borderline VPI.

I have (sorry I can't point you to any refs) that the adenoids assist with velar closure in children because they can't yet coordinate velar elevation like adults. The velum is the slowest articulator and it may take a while to fully learn to time its movement.
