RE: [phono-tx] vowels only, severe SSD

Sonya,

I have been so tardy in responding to this that your little boy is probably
3;9 now!

Regarding his stimulability, is he stimulable in isolation for /r/, ch, th,
and sh, or stimulable for them to two syllable positions (bee, eeb; key,
eek; soo, oose; etc)? If the latter is the case, then I think you are
probably on the right track working on the syllable structure process, ICD
and FCD using Shelley Velleman's phonotactic therapy (Velleman, 2002). If,
on the other hand, he is only stimulable in isolation I think I would
actually do Miccio's stimulability therapy, see:

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/phonologicaltherapy/message/12761

I would ONLY send home for drill practice CV and VC combinations in which he
did NOT include the little hiatus between consonant and vowel, or vowel and
consonant and have his parents really reinforce the 'smooth transition'
aspect of his CV and VC syllables.

Language, 23(1), 43-56.

The other thing I might try is just ONE cluster, in this case /fl/, just to
see what he does with it; alternatively /sn/. There are pictures here under
markedness:

I would also make a brag book of the CV, VC and CVC words that he CAN say.

===

' ... how long I can expect to work with him and what would be a typical
time frame to get his speech inline with his age peers?'

Unfortunately we don't have good answers for parents when it comes to
predicting dosage and duration of intervention, except perhaps to say that
initial severity appears to be the key predictor of *how much* therapy
across a range of intervention studies.

Is his /f/ in four and five a proper /f/ or is it more like /v/?

Best wishes,
Caroline
