Re: [phono-tx] vowels only, severe SSD

Re: "...I meant to say, is he stimulable in isolation, or stimulable to two syllable positions, for all sounds EXCEPT /r/, ch, th, and sh?"

Hi Caroline! Thanks so much for responding.
In regards to his stimuability to two syllable positions he can successfully imitate CV CV with /b, m, d, h, w, v, g, l, n/. He is able to imitate CV CV /t, k, f, s, p/, however these ones with a hiatus eg. t-ar, t-oo etc. His consonants tended to drop off at CV VC ( ie. goo- oo)however he was stimuable to /b, k, t, g & m,/ (some with hiatus). I guess this may be an area to target in rx- CV VC combinations?. Today he was unable to imitate /ch, sh, th, r, y, z, dz/ at isolation level. He did however substitute v/z, w/y, w/r.

I will review his brag book and make sure that he is only practising the words that he can say. His Mo is very ambitious with this book at times, which is great, but I will reinforce to her the purpose is for him to practice the words he can say correctly. We have spent time discussing syllable structure and this hierarchy through various rx activities so I'm sure she will be understanding.

As for /fl/ and /sn/, he tends to cluster reduce or omit entire initial cluster at connected speech level, and after a model eg. f-u/flu, ap/snap, s-ake/snake. ("-" denotes hiatus).

His /f/ in four and five is definitely a /f/, not a /v/- but he produces any /f/ initial combination (CV or CVC) with a hiatus.

We have been working on functional CV CV phrases, with success, however progress is steady and he usually requires cued artic or fuor as feedback on error occasion (ICD or FCD) in order to self correct. I guess future directions would be CV VC combinations?

One other thing- he says "bilk" for `milk'. I made up a minimal pairs activity reinforcing the importance of saying /m/ instead of /b/ and raising his awareness that when he says "bilk" it changes the meaning of the word, and also trialled alternating the initial sound with Nuffield pictures but have had little success. Have you ever seen this substitution error before?

Kind Regards,
Sonya
