Geospatial Technician

Requirements:

This position requires a B.A. or B.S. in anthropology, archaeology, or a related discipline with an emphasis in archaeology and geospatial technologies. Equivalent experience may be counted for degree requirements. Experience in field mapping using total station and global positioning system (GPS) receivers and experience in manipulating spatial data in geographic information systems (GIS) and image analysis software is preferred. In addition, a demonstrated understanding of basic cartographic and geospatial principles, as well as previous cultural resource management (CRM) experience are preferred. Continuing professional education, professional involvement, and adherence to professional ethical standards are integral to this position.

Job Description:
The geospatial technician collects field data and organizes those data for display on cartographic maps and analysis in a GIS platform. This is a professional entry-level position requiring the ability to learn, take direction, and work under the supervision of assistant geospatial analysts and geospatial analysts to meet general geospatial and cartographic needs on a project-to-project basis. The geospatial technician may be required to work in both field and laboratory settings. Specifically, this position includes the following duties:
• Collect field data using various surveying instruments that include total stations, GPS receivers, and photographic cameras
• Record field data in both paper and electronic formats
• Implement outlined procedures for the recording and handling of geospatial data
• Digitize in geospatial software in both hard copy and soft copy formats
• Georeference and mosaic digital data sets
• Clean and attribute geospatial data
• Correct and clean spatial data collected by GPS receivers
• Prepare cartographic products
