Northwest Kimberley (Australia) archaeology APA (Industry) scholarship.

A  PhD APA(Industry) scholarship is available at the University of New England as part of an  ARC Linkage Grant. The project, Change and Continuity: archaeology,  art and chronology in the Northwest Kimberley provides the opportunity for a candidate to work in a strong multidisciplinary team investigating some of the fundamental issues in Australian archaeology.    The research team is led by Prof. Mike Morwood (UOW and UNE, archaeology and rock art) together with Dr June Ross (UNE, rock art) and Dr Kira Westaway (Macquarie Uni, dating, especially OSL).  Dr Mark Moore (UNE, ARC Research Fellow) is working on the excavations and stone tool assemblages, Jillian Huntley (UNE, PhD candidate) is undertaking PXRF analyses and Murray Scown (UNE, Hons student) is mapping  environmental and cultural data.  In addition, Dr Simone Haberle (ANU) is working on phytoliths and Dr Max Aubert (ANU) will be experimenting with rock art dating techniques.  Applicants are free to select a research topic that matches their particular skills and interests provided it falls within the broad framework of the project but preference will be given to someone keen to develop a research topic focused on stone tools or GIS mapping.  We are seeking an applicant who is passionate about pursuing a career in Australian archaeology.

The scholarship provides access to previous research findings and the chance to work alongside the Traditional Owners, the Kandiwal Aboriginal Corporation who are Linkage Partners in the project.  An annual allowance for field expenses and airfares is available, and assistance with in-field logistics will be given, which means that working in this remote area becomes feasible.

Interested applicants should contact Dr June Ross at jross4@une.edu.au  or Prof Mike Morwood at mikem@uow.edu.au for an outline of the project and details of the scholarship. Applications close Sept 30th 2010.
