Fort McCoy, Wisconsin – Seasonal Field Technician Openings
Colorado State University's Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands will be hiring a
limited number of individuals for seasonal Field Technician positions for the rest of the 2010 field season.
Applicants should be in good physical health, be able to work in adverse conditions and must
have completed a recognized archaeological field school. Applicants should also be willing to commute
to, or relocate near, the Fort McCoy U.S Army installation located near scenic Sparta, Wisconsin
(roughly 30 miles from La Crosse).
Fieldwork will consist of archaeological survey (shovel tests and pedestrian) and limited excavation.
These positions will be filled ASAP and fieldwork will continue until late October/early November, 2010.
The hourly wage for Field Technicians will be $15.85/hr. No per diem is provided.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Demonstrated knowledge of traditional archaeological field survey and
excavation procedures. Must have completed a formal archaeological field school at an accredited
college, university or similar program.
PREFERENCE FOR: BA/BS in archaeology, geology, anthropology, or history. Experience on military
installations or with Army installation Cultural Resource Management Programs. Excellent written and
oral communication skills. Ability to stay on until the end of the field season. Possess a valid state
driver’s license.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Accomplish archaeological investigations (shovel testing, surface survey, and
hand excavation), collect GPS data, conduct preliminary laboratory analysis of collected artifacts,
prepare notes of all fieldwork completed, including field mapping and conduct initial preparation of
artifacts for curation. Ninety-five percent of working hours will be spent in a field environment in all
seasons, often working in difficult terrain away from modern conveniences.
