JOB DESCRIPTION



POSITION TITLE:  Cultural Resources Archaeology Manager

JOB SUMMARY:  Sapphos Environmental, Inc., a growing environmental, planning, and resource management company located in Pasadena, CA is currently recruiting a part-time Archaeology Manager to join our expanding Cultural Resources Group.  Under the supervision of the President, this part-time position will entail fieldwork, archival research, site evaluation and recordation, preparation of technical reports, analysis of project impacts on archaeological resources, and mitigation monitoring.

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

        Supervise and manage the archaeology department including training the staff on all areas of project goals, providing guidance  in all areas of technical projects
        Conduct staff evaluations and establish model behavior while ensuring staff stays in compliance with company policies
        Manager to act as liaison between staff and President
        Oversee Phase I and Phase II archaeological surveys
        Participate and track all archaeological monitoring conducted by staff
        Conduct record searches at the Information Centers maintained by the California Office of Historic Preservation
        Develop and execute archaeological research designs
        Prepare site records, State of California Historic Resources Inventory forms, Cultural Resources Technical Reports, and Environmental Impact Report/Statement sections relating to archaeological resources
        Oversee the coordination with the Office of Historic Preservation, Native American Heritage Commission, and Bureau of Land Management
        Manage the preparation of proposals and the development of cultural resource investigation budgets and schedules

REQUIRED TECHNICAL SKILLS:

        Experience in California cultural resources management with a working command of federal and state cultural resources statutes
        Operational knowledge of the prehistory and history of California and the Southwest
        Experience in the inventory and evaluation of prehistoric and historic archaeological resources
        Background in paleontology not required but would be desirable
        Excellent communication skills
        5 to 10 years of supervisory experience
        Demonstrated writing and research abilities
        Ability to use computer hardware, software, and other related information technologies for extended periods on a daily basis
        Knowledge of GPS data collection equipment


OTHER SKILLS:  The ideal candidate must be detail-oriented, have a professional demeanor and strong organizational skills, and possess the ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and multitask in a fast-paced environment.  The candidate should be able to work in a team environment with a variety of project members and manage tasks as delegated by project lead.  The candidate must possess strong communication skills, the ability to work closely with clients, and be able to supervise the work of others.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  The successful candidate will have a MA /MS in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related discipline and will have a minimum of 12 years of field experience. Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) status is desirable.  A record of professional research and publication will be favorably viewed.
