[ShovelBums.Org] NPS Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program

 

Howdy Folks,


For Summer 2011, CRDIP is sponsoring a 10-week, paid internship at Biscayne National Park to work on submerged shipwrecks for a diverse undergrad, grad student, or recent graduate.  The student will receive a weekly allowance, travel stipend, and housing accommodations as well as an AmeriCorp Educational Grant.  For more information on this and 15 other internships, visit the CRDIP website at http://www.cr.nps.gov/crdi/internships/intrnCRDIP.htm.

The Biscayne National Park project details are as follows:

Biscayne National Park, National Park Service Shipwreck Archeological Site Monitoring and Survey Project Homestead, FLORIDA

The intern will complete condition assessments on known submerged historic
shipwrecks and terrestrial prehistoric and historic archeological sites in
Biscayne National Park (BISC). The project also includes ground truthing
potential archeological sites previously identified during magnetic surveys
and documenting them if historic resources are encountered. The intern will
assist the staff archeologist in visiting archeological sites, recording
site information and measurements, and entering the resulting data into the
NPS Archeological Sites Management and Information System (ASMIS). The
project represents an ongoing effort at the park to maintain accurate
records of the potential deterioration of archeological sites, particularly
those in a marine environment, and to eventually identify a method to
arrest this deterioration in order to preserve the sites in perpetuity.

Due to limited housing options, male applicants are preferred. Must be a
certified SCUBA diver and able to pass stringent swimming and SCUBA
assessments. Operational GIS software experience and anthropology or
archeology major preferred, but not required. A vehicle is recommended.

The 2011 student application deadline is Monday, March 1, 2011. All student

  Students must provide the following information:

  A General Application Form, available on the CRDIP website at:

  A resume or a curriculum vita (1-2 pages) that includes: educational
     information; previous and current experience; publications or
     presentations; awards, scholarships, honors, etc.; and 2-3 personal
     references.



  A cover letter that includes a brief statement, 150 words or less, of
     why you want the internship and why you are qualified. Please
     indicate 2-3 specific internships that you would like to fill.



  A transcript. An unofficial one is acceptable.


  At least one letter of reference from a professor or previous
     supervisor/employer.
