ARCHAEOLOGIST AT POVERTY POINT

Position: The Poverty Point Station Archaeology Program invites applications for a short-term position beginning immediately to work with the Station Archaeologist in a joint program of the
Duties: The archaeologist's primary role will be to handle the day-to-day responsibilities of the Poverty Point Station Archaeology Program, allowing the Station Archaeologist to focus on preparation of the World Heritage application for Poverty Point State Historic Site. The range of responsibilities include leading public outreach efforts both on- and off-site; screening/floating sediments; sorting/cataloging artifacts; assisting outside researchers with planning and conducting field and/or collections research; and testing prior to and/or monitoring ground disturbance at the site.
The position does not involve fieldwork related to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
Qualifications: An M.A. in anthropology is required; a Ph.D. is preferred. Completion of a prehistoric archaeological study must be evidenced by a thesis, dissertation, or equivalent report. Experience directing fieldwork at mound sites, conducting geoarchaeological research, and/or performing extensive collections research is highly desirable. Also helpful is experience in organizing independent research, public speaking, report writing, administering budgets, and working with governmental representatives.
