[ShovelBums.Org] Announcing BioBums (longer version to share)

Hi Folks,

For the 12th anniversary of ShovelBums I am forming BioBums, a biological sciences employment service, today at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BioBums

What is BioBums?

BioBums is a parallel employment service to the popular Archaeology/Cultural Resource Management (CRM) service I run, ShovelBums.org. ShovelBums was founded in 1999 and has helped fill over 23,000 Archaeology and Cultural Resource Management (CRM) positions through it's 15,300 member community.  ShovelBums has only succeeded because of people like you, scientists who want to work in the field that they love, have helped to spread the word about ShovelBums.  What I need from you is help announcing BioBums to your personal networks of scientists and HR at relevant environmental companies.  If you could send this message to your network, announce it on relevant mailing lists, post it on relevant websites, retweet the URL (you can use this short version of the URL: http://yhoo.it/g3lVmU ) I would really appreciate it.

During these early days of BioBums positions posted here will also be posted by me on the large ShovelBums mailing list to help spread the word. Many of the ShovelBums members are employed at larger environmental firms and can help to get the word out about your position.

Do we need BioBums?

I *think* so.  When I founded ShovelBums there were other related services but ShovelBums seemed to fill a needed niche.  From what I have seen over the years the biological sciences could use a similar service.

Why the "Bums" name R. Joe, i'm a scientist dammit, not a bum!

:-)  So am I.  If you aren't friends with any archaeologist you might not be familiar with the term "ShovelBums".  A ShovelBum can be a pejorative term coming from the wrong person, but among archaeologists it is a title that is earned, not given.  It reflects that coming of age period every archaeologist must undergo to learn the trade, that point in time when you give up your roots and head to road to get the training you need.  The general consensus is that any PhD archaeologist worth their salt has been a ShovelBum at one point or another.  Many of the original founding members of ShovelBums, an informal group of archaeologists in the late 90's at the University of Arkansas called the Pocket_Gophers are now respected professors across the country.

Do you only advertise "Bum" jobs?

Nope.  Reread the paragraph above.  Using ShovelBums as an example over 70% of the jobs advertised are for senior staff.

How will BioBums work?

You can read more about how ShovelBums works here. BioBums will follow a similar format.  During the start up period positions posted to BioBums will be free until the membership hits 300 active members or 50 job postings.

What type of messages will go to BioBums?  Will I get tons of messages?

The BioBums mailing list is for JOBS only. Do not post to this mailing list unless you are sending in a job. If you have questions you can use the contact form at ShovelBums.org to reach me.

Because this mailing list is restricted to exclusively jobs the volume should not be that high (though the more the better right?).

What format should the jobs be?  Who can send a job announcement?

All job postings MUST be included in the body of your e-mail message to the mailing list.  I do not allow attachments to go out the mailing list for security reasons.  You must also be a member of the BioBums mailing list to be able to post a position.  This really helps prevent any spam from making it to you.

By the way, who the heck are you?

My name is R. Joe Brandon.  I am an archaeologist with my undergraduate degree from Northern Illinois University and my Masters from University of Arkansas/Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies.  I have worked since the mid 80's in Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, Ecuador, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, North Dakota, Illinois, Ohio, New York, Connecticut, South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana.  I have produced one book, an edited book on GIS for predictive models, and I currently specialize in using kites for near earth aerial photography.  These days running ShovelBums takes up most of my time.

Swell R. Joe!  How do I join?

Best,

R. Joe Brandon

The most important aspect of this list is that it is for one purpose only.: announcing jobs/non paying volunteer postings in the international CRM field at all levels; Field Tech, Professors, SHPOs, etc...  Caveat Emptor though my friends.  Not all jobs pay the same, nor is their treatment of employees the same - as the companies are checking your references, you should also check them out - make sure they pay fair wages, treat their employees professionally, and do quality work.  If you have at least a BA you deserve fair remuneration, so ask for it, and in turn you provide your employer with excellent service.   You ARE a trained professional, NOT a "shovelbum"  - the name is in jest - act professional, expect to be treated like one.
