[ShovelBums.Org] Historic Preservation Internship

American Conservation Experience  – Historic Preservation Internship

12-week position starting early June through August,  2011, schedule variable, flexibility required.  Due to housing limitations local Southern California candidates strongly encouraged to apply.

Summary:

The Fowler Museum at UCLA is partnering with American Conservation Experience (ACE), a Non-Profit Conservation Corps based in Flagstaff, AZ, to recruit and coordinate one outgoing and enthusiastic intern, with a historic archaeology or historic preservation background, to support the research and historic remodeling of a 1890's home that is listed on the National Historic Register.

This is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic entry-level professional with a deep interest in historic preservation, historic artifact research and curation, building restoration, and the preservation of history through the restoration of historic structures.

The historic structure is located in Avalon, California, which is located on Catalina Island, 26 miles off the coast of Southern California.  More information on the specifics of the project site will be provided to qualified candidates.

Duties and Responsibilities:

American Conservation Experience is currently developing a Cultural Resource Management program.   As a member of the ACE team, the intern selected to implement the historic preservation aspects of the project will be required to implement the following under the supervision of the onsite project manager and the Curator of Archaeology at the Fowler Museum at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Duties include but are not limited to:

·      Completing a thorough historic review of the structure, including all architectural plans, in an effort to determine the origin and cultural resource significance of the property and artifacts within the house.  Determine what materials should be utilized in rebuilding the structure.

·      Cataloguing all property within the structure using standard curation methodology.  The process will be done by photographing each item within the house, taking museum quality documentation, professionally packing and storing the items in a manner to assure that they are not damaged in the transportation and storage process.

·      Each item documented will then be researched to determine its origin and cultural/historic significance. Items of significant cultural/historic value will be researched further, providing a history unto itself.

·      The physical structure restoration/rehabilitation will be catalogued, and findings used to assist with the reconstruction of the facility as near as possible to its (and as desired by the owner of the property) original appearance and function. The materials used in the house (ie. pillars on the hand-rails) will be researched to determine if they are historically significant.

·      Providing assistance to determine the best possible method for restoring significant aspects of the facility.  Assure that nothing of historic significance will be lost during the rehabilitation process.

·      Working closely with the construction contractor to efficiently document the restoration without impeding progress in any way.

·      Creating a thorough professional report that can be used to historically interpret the property.

·      Assuring privacy and discretion as desired by the property owner.

·      Preparing historical context narratives of environmental or cultural documents.

·      Potentially helping with interpretation of the structure and rehabilitation process with visiting historic preservationists, guests, and others.

Benefit to ACE Historic Preservation Intern:

·      Opportunity to provide guidance and support to the rehabilitation of a structure on the National Historic Register.

·      Opportunity to work alongside passionate professionals dedicated to the preservation of our western legacy.

·      Exposure to a real world rehabilitation involving complex management challenges.

·      Opportunity to help preserve a national historic treasure.

·      Housing will be provided when working ON the Island during June and parts of July and August. Transportation to and from the Island will be provided. Housing and transportation in Southern California may need to be procured independently if necessary.

Qualifications:  Applicants should have a minimum of an undergraduate degree in Historic Preservation, Archaeology,  Anthropology, History, or a related field.  Applicants who have knowledge and skills in curation and restoration of historic structures, including structural experience are strongly encouraged to apply.  Most importantly, candidates should have demonstrated interest in pursuing a career within the scope of this internship. Applicants must be passionate and interested in historic preservation.

The ACE Historic Preservation Intern must enjoy conducting research on historic structures, working with construction contractors, and be able to handle themselves in a discrete and professional manner. Organization, punctuality and attention to detail are critical to the success of this position, as is the ability to juggle multiple projects at the same time and think quickly on their feet.  In general, the applicant will be required to do whatever is necessary to successfully accomplish the goals of this program.

Other Requirements:

·      Must have a valid class c drivers license and clean driving record

·      Position has no residency restrictions

·      Be between 18 – 35 years of age

·      Personal Medical insurance is required for the duration of the internship

·      Drug users should not consider applying, as ACE reserves the right to require drug testing

·      Intern needs to have personal housing within driving distance of Long Beach, CA, as the internship may not take place entirely on Catalina Island. Those who already live in the Southern California area will obviously be at an advantage in this respect. However, please recognize that where you currently live and your anticipated housing needs will not factor into whether or not you are considered for this position.

Applicants need not possess every qualification above, however, one must be smart, highly motivated, flexible and possess the necessary self-reliance to figure out how to get things done. ACE interns must be fit, mature, safety conscious, and ready for a responsible adventure.

The most important aspect of this list is that it is for one purpose only.: announcing jobs/non paying volunteer postings in the international CRM field at all levels; Field Tech, Professors, SHPO's, etc...  Caveat Emptor though my friends.  Not all jobs pay the same, nor is their treatment of employees the same - as the companies are checking your references, you should also check them out - make sure they pay fair wages, treat their employees professionally, and do quality work.  If you have at least a BA you deserve fair remuneration, so ask for it, and in turn you provide your employer with excellent service.   You ARE a trained professional, NOT a "shovelbum"  - the name is in jest - act professional, expect to be treated like one.
