We are seeking to fill on-call Archaeological Field Technician positions for the 2011 field season for our Pasadena, California office. These are temporary, hourly positions and the candidate will typically work 40 hours per week depending on workload. Anticipated fieldwork will occur throughout southern California, including active U.S. military facilities. Candidates may be asked to submit to background screening in order to work within these facilities. Pay rate will be based on individual qualifications and experience. Some projects include overtime hours or prevailing wage rates. When project travel is required, per diem ($46/day or current federal rate), hotel room accommodations, and field vehicles are provided. Project travel time is paid.

 

Due to the on-call nature of seasonal fieldwork, candidates local to southern California are strongly preferred.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Work in the field under the supervision of Crew Chiefs in the performance of archaeological fieldwork;
  • Conduct archaeological survey, testing, data recovery, and/or construction monitoring;
  • Document field methods and results using field forms, digital photography, and sketches;
  • Contribute to team efforts during cultural resources field and lab work;
  • Take initiative, resolving problems, and creating improved procedures to assure tasks are completed in the most effective manner and;
  • Assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using Trimble units (knowledge of ArcPad or TerraSync is a plus).

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field.
  • Participation in an accredited field school or equivalent experience.
  • Six months experience working as a field archeologist in southern California.
  • Experience with the application of standard archaeological survey and excavation techniques.
  • Ability to travel and be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather conditions, often in rugged terrain, and be able to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.

JBR Environmental Consultants, Inc. seeks qualified candidates to fill temporary Biologist positions in our Reno Nevada, and Elko, Nevada offices.  

Qualifications: 

  • 3+ years experience
  • BS degree in a scientific/natural resource/environmental field, field survey/biological clearance experience, knowledge of Great Basin vegetation
  • State and/or Federal environmental permitting experience 
  • Excellent communication and writing skills are required
  • Must be physically able to successfully carry out field assignments including field surveys, site visits, and investigations
  • Must be willing to travel up to 70% of the month in the western states
  • Attention to detail, flexibility, and a desire to be involved in a variety of environmental projects

 

Field Duties:  Position will be spending 70 percent of time performing field work under a variety of environmental conditions, including extreme temperature conditions, which may require carrying up to 50 pounds and occasional long field days and some evenings or weekends and will be performing threatened and endangered species surveys, vegetation surveys, construction monitoring, habitat assessments, and more. 

 

Office duties:  Position will be managing field data and the providing data for the preparation of various NEPA related documents including Environmental Assessments, Biological Assessments, resource-specific technical reports, and more.

SWCA is actively seeking to fill multiple on-call Staff Archaeologist positions for our Cultural Resources Program in our Pasadena, California office. Under supervision of a Project Manager, a Staff Archaeologist will perform field and office tasks while working with and supervising crew members. Anticipated fieldwork will occur throughout southern California, including within active U.S. military facilities. Selected candidates may be asked to submit to background screening in order to work on these facilities.

 

These positions are seasonal and hourly with a typical 40 hour work week. Some projects may be less than 40 hours per week, while others may include overtime hours or prevailing wage rates. When project travel is required, a per diem (typically $46 a day or current federal rate), hotel room accommodations, and field vehicles will be provided, and project travel time will be paid. Due to the on-call nature of seasonal fieldwork, candidates local to southern California are strongly preferred. The base pay rate for these positions will be based on individual qualifications and experience.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure appropriate preliminary research is conducted and organized prior to fieldwork, including the coordination of equipment, staff, and other necessary resources prior to the start of the project;
  • Supervise fieldwork, including archaeological surveying, testing, data recovery, and/or construction monitoring, and quality control of data collected;
  • Create and maintain a positive morale in the field and mentor junior staff;
  • On a daily basis, collect and review data, including GPS data and paperwork from crew members, and track progress;
  • Communicate regularly with the project manager to ensure budgetary and timetable needs are met;
  • Take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures to ensure tasks are completed in the most effective and efficient manner, and;
  • Organize the report writing and production efforts, including drafting report sections in coordination with the project manager.

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field. A graduate degree is preferred, but not required;
  • Participation in an accredited field school or equivalent fieldwork experience;
  • One year experience working as a field archeologist in California or the Great Basin regions;
  • Experience with the application of standard archaeological survey and excavation techniques;
  • Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather conditions, often in rugged terrain, while carrying equipment weighing up to 40 pounds - plus spending additional hours organizing paperwork daily;
  • Demonstrated experience to easily deal with ambiguity such as unexpected changes in weather, changes in client demands, changes in crew makeup or size, etc.;
  • Ability to lead a large crew and to coordinate several small crews on a project. Prior experience leading field crews on a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies if desired, but not required;
  • Ability to make appropriate decisions in the field concerning staff assignments, conflict resolution and safety;
  • Extremely organized and meticulous with ensuring survey, documentation and paperwork are accurately completed;
  • Ability to provide guidance and critique of crew performance per company guidelines;
  • Demonstrated ability to plan ahead, anticipate potential problems areas, and organize field and report methods in the most efficient manner, and;
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and with technical writing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced skills and knowledge in one or more specialty areas. Of particular interest are geoarchaeology, historical archaeology, and GPS/GIS technology (using Trimble units and ArcPad or TerraSync software);
  • Prior experience completing all aspects of a project, from pre-field tasks to final report preparation for a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies;
  • Primary report authorship in a CRM context for a variety of project types and sizes, regions and agencies, and;
  • Prior experience providing QA/QC review of field documents, site forms and reports.

• Insure that all fieldwork, analysis, and report production is conducted within the SWCA quality control/quality assurance program;
• Remain current with Agency protocol for conducting cultural resources work, particularly in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming. Additional experience in Minnesota and Iowa is a plus;
• Experience with tribal consultation and/or NAGPRA laws is a plus, and coordination with THPO, BIA, and USACE and other tribal/government groups/personnel will be required;
• Work closely with SWCA's other managers and directors, particularly with the Sheridan, Wyoming and Denver, Colorado offices, and all offices throughout the company to promote SWCA's business interests in adherence to its mission, vision, and values;
• Work closely and develop and/or continue existing relationships with the SHPO in North and South Dakota, and other federal agencies such as the USFS;
• Coordinate with the client; supervise, direct, and instruct subcontractors; take initiative and problem-solve, and;
• Assist Senior Project Managers as needed with scheduling field personnel and equipment.

Required Experience
• B.S./B.A. or M.A. (or equivalent experience) in environmental planning, science, archaeology, biology, or a related field and 3+ years of experience in cultural resource project management
• Working knowledge of cultural resources/106 in the Rocky Mountains/Plains regions
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to foster a friendly, positive, productive, and scholarly working relationship with team members
• Proven experience with high-level agency consultation
