[ShovelBums.Org] Archaeological Technician

 

Description:
Working cooperatively with the National Park Service's Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LAKE) and Parashant National Monument (PARA), the Great Basin Institute is recruiting an Archaeological Technician to join our AmeriCorps program and assist NPS archaeology staff with archaeological field work, lab analysis, and data processing throughout the Parks. Field work includes surveying for cultural resources, recording and documenting cultural resources, and testing and excavation of archaeological sites. Lab analysis and data processing duties include analysis and cataloging of artifacts, updating of databases, and filling out site forms in support of SHPO and NHPA reporting requirements. Completing archaeological surveys in the southwest requires the physical endurance to walk over a variety of terrains and in a variety of weather conditions, including extreme heat. Overnight camping for several days at a time in remote areas is required.

Compensation:  
o    Living Allowance: $22,000
o    AmeriCorps Education Award*: $5,550
o    Student loan forbearance and interest accrual payment**
o    Medical and dental benefits
o    Field per diem while camping
 
Timeline: 
o    September 2011 – September 2012
o    Full time, 40+ hours per week with some weekend work required

Location:
o    Lake Mead NRA and Parashant National Monument encompass over 1.5 million acres in southeastern Nevada and northwestern Arizona

Qualifications:
Required:
o    Educational and field experiences related to archaeology, anthropology, or indigenous peoples studies;
o    Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, camp in the backcountry for consecutive days, work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, and be in overall good physical condition;
o    Ability to work productively and cooperatively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals and communicate effectively with a diverse public;
o    Posses a valid, state-issued driver's license and clean driving record; and
o    Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of two in a lifetime, regardless of award amount), and (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and federal criminal background checks.

Helpful but not required:
o    Knowledge of historic and/or prehistoric history and artifacts of the Mojave desert regions of the southwest;
o    Read and interpret topographical maps and navigate using a compass;
o    Experience operating hand-held GPS equipment for navigation and electronic field data collection;
o    Experience driving 4WD vehicles on paved and un-paved roads;
o    Posses good organizational skills and be detail oriented; and
o    Experience working in the desert southwest, or similar desert climates.
