Job Title:  Contract Field Archaeologist

Location:  Andover, Kansas

 

We are looking to hire a full-time and/or part-time contract Archaeologists for our Cultural Resources Program in our Andover, Kansas office. Under supervision of a Team Leader, a Staff Archaeologist will perform field and office tasks while working with crew members. This position will be working on a pedestrian surveys for a linear project.

This position will be hourly with a typical 40+ hour work week.

Required Skills

• Ensure appropriate preliminary research is conducted and organized prior to fieldwork, including the coordination of equipment, staff, and other necessary resources prior to the start of the project;

• Supervise fieldwork, including archaeological surveying, testing, data recovery, and/or construction monitoring, and quality control of data collected;

• Create and maintain a positive morale in the field and mentor junior staff;

• On a daily basis, collect and review data, including GPS data and paperwork from crew members, and track progress;

• Communicate regularly with the Team Leader to ensure budgetary and timetable needs are met;

• Take initiative, resolve problems, and create improved procedures to ensure tasks are completed in the most effective and efficient manner, and;

• Organize the report writing and production efforts, including drafting report sections in coordination with the project manager.

Required Experience

• A bachelor’s or Master’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field. A graduate degree is preferred, but not required;

• Participation in an accredited field school or equivalent fieldwork experience;

• One year experience working as a field archeologist

• Experience with the application of standard archaeological survey and excavation techniques;

• Ability to travel and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather conditions, often in rugged terrain, while carrying equipment weighing up to 40 pounds - plus spending additional hours organizing paperwork daily;

• Demonstrated experience to easily deal with ambiguity such as unexpected changes in weather, changes in client demands, changes in crew makeup or size, etc.;

• Ability to make appropriate decisions in the field concerning staff assignments, conflict resolution and safety;

• Extremely organized and meticulous with ensuring survey, documentation and paperwork are accurately completed;

• Ability to provide guidance and critique of crew performance per company guidelines;

• Demonstrated ability to plan ahead, anticipate potential problems areas, and organize field and report methods in the most efficient manner, and;

• Strong communication skills, both verbal and with technical writing.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced skills and knowledge in one or more specialty areas. Of particular interest are geoarchaeology, historical archaeology, and GPS/GIS technology (using Trimble units and ArcPad or TerraSync software);

• Prior experience completing all aspects of a project, from pre-field tasks to final report preparation for a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies;

• Primary report authorship in a CRM context for a variety of project types and sizes, regions and agencies, and;

• Prior experience providing QA/QC review of field documents, site forms and reports.
