The Louisiana Division of Archaeology is seeking applicants for a position in our Baton Rouge, Louisiana, office. The position description and required skills and knowledge are outlined below. This is a full-time position with health insurance, vacation and sick time; retirement is not available with this position. Funding for the position is guaranteed for at least one year, and may extend for up to three years. Salary dependent on experience. This announcement will remain open until a qualified candidate has been accepted for the position.
B.A. in anthropology or closely related field is required, and a M.A. degree is helpful. Field experience in archaeology is desirable, as is experience with the Section 106 process.
The primary responsibilities of this position are:
1) To log and track via electronic databases all incoming and outgoing Section 106 correspondence;
2) To log in all Section 106 reports, scan their Abstracts and add to them to an electronic database;
3) To conduct initial site file checks for projects submitted for Section 106 review, and in consultation with Division staff, determine whether an archaeological survey is recommended;
4) Draft letters to clients concerning the recommendation for archaeological survey;
5) Serve as the office point of contact for clients calling with questions about the Section 106 process and our correspondence with them about a particular project;
Secondary responsibilities include:
1) Entering project survey areas into ARCGIS map coverages.
Required skills and abilities:
Familiarity with archaeological field methods and site forms;
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Excel, Access, and Word;
Knowledge of the Section 106 process;
Ability to communicate clearly and accurately via phone, email, letter, and in person
information about our office and the Section 106 process;
Desired skills and abilities:
Working knowledge of ARCGIS, including entering and editing shapefiles and
coverages.
