[ShovelBums.Org] Geoarchaeologist - Pasadena, CA

SWCA Environmental Consultants is an employee-owned company of environmental professionals who specialize in natural and cultural resource management, environmental planning, and regulatory compliance.

We are seeking a Geoarchaeologist to join the cultural resources staff in our Pasadena, California office. Under supervision of the Archaeology Team Lead and in coordination with a Principal Investigator, a Geoarchaeologist collects data and interprets natural and cultural sediments and stratigraphy in support of archaeological studies, and describes the results of field studies in written reports, graphics, and report sections. The Geoarchaeologist will work with field personnel to insure that interpretations of soil stratigraphy are consistent and accurate. Other duties may include reviews of pertinent literature, preparation of background sections for reports, preparation of stratigraphic profile drawings, interpretation of stratigraphic sections from excavation units, trenches, cores and other exposures, and in-field and post-field analysis of sediment samples and cores.

This is a seasonal, hourly position and the candidate will typically work 40 hours per week depending on workload. Some projects include overtime hours or prevailing wage rates.  When project travel is required, per diem is typically $46/day (or current federal rate), hotel room accommodations, and field vehicles are provided, and project travel time is paid. Pay rate will be based on individual qualifications and experience. Anticipated fieldwork will occur throughout southern California, including within active U.S. military facilities.  Due to the on-call nature of seasonal fieldwork, candidates local to southern California are strongly preferred.

Required Skills:

·     The ability to identify, describe, and interpret stratigraphic sequences;

·    The ability to identify the morphology of western landforms and zones, and to relate this to cultural contexts, and the ability to gather the necessary information for unfamiliar areas;

·    A familiarity with soil deposits and depositional processes;

·    A working knowledge of the correct nomenclature and methods for soil identification;

·    An ability to relate stratigraphic soil sequences to archaeological deposits and interpret depositional contexts to inform archaeological studies;

·    The ability to work as part of a team of scientists;

  • Ability to travel and be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather conditions, and often in rugged terrain;
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and technical writing.

Required Experience:

·     A Bachelor's degree in geology, geomorphology, geoarcheology or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications/Experience:

  • Graduate degree in geology, geomorphology, geoarcheology, or a closely related field.

·    A minimum of 2 years experience working in the southwestern United States on cultural resource projects as a geoarchaeologist/geomorphologist.

·    Completion of an accredited archaeological field school program.

  • One year experience working as a field archeologist in California or the Great Basin.
  • Primary report authorship in a CRM context.

The most important aspect of this list is that it is for one purpose only.: announcing jobs/non paying volunteer postings in the international CRM field at all levels; Field Tech, Professors, SHPO's, etc...  Caveat Emptor though my friends.  Not all jobs pay the same, nor is their treatment of employees the same - as the companies are checking your references, you should also check them out - make sure they pay fair wages, treat their employees professionally, and do quality work.  If you have at least a BA you deserve fair remuneration, so ask for it, and in turn you provide your employer with excellent service.   You ARE a trained professional, NOT a "shovelbum"  - the name is in jest - act professional, expect to be treated like one.
