Millennia Research Limited, an archaeological consulting company located in Victoria, BC has openings for several job categories for an upcoming major archaeological excavation in Prince Rupert Harbour. This advertisement is for the Archaeological Site Director. There are two positions available for Archaeological Site Director, since there are two large archaeological excavations that will proceed concurrently. This is an opportunity to take part in an exciting research project using state-of-the-art technology. The project may be first in North America to use a ‘unitless’ spatial paradigm. All data generated by the project will have precise 3D provenience collected with the use of robotic total stations, and notes and bag labelling will be reduced through the use of bar codes and tablet computers. Training in the use of these technologies will be provided.
The positions are temporary full time, expected to last approximately four months with a likely start date in March 2012. Individuals with outstanding capabilities only available for shorter terms will be considered for the position. Possibility of on-going employment at the end of the project.
Applicants for all field positions must be physically fit and agile, reliable, willing to work in a mentally and physically challenging environment. They must have very strong interpersonal skills. The work entails travel by open herring skiff with a beach landing and pickup (or walking along a rough beach during higher winds when boat travel is unsafe). Applicants must be able to give clear direction, quickly grasp the ‘big picture’, and be able to quickly learn new skills.
Specific tasks, amongst others include:
· Implementing research design under direction of Principle Investigator;
· Managing the overall day-to-day running of an archaeological excavation, including ensuring that there is sufficient labour, equipment, and supplies necessary for the job;
· Supervision of crew of approximately 15 people;
· Ensuring a safe workplace, including that all requirements of the Safety Plan are being followed by staff and visitors;
· Coordinating with Project Manager (Principal Investigator), other Site Director, boat operator, and project coordinator to ensure safe and efficient transportation or site access, taking into account wind, waves, intensity of precipitation, and tide height;
· Ensuring that project progression is adequate to meet the end goals;
· Ensuring that environmental management plans are followed so that silt discharge and fuel spills are avoided, kept within acceptable levels, and cleaned as appropriate;
· Observing and interpreting archaeological excavation data (in concert with the Project Manager, who will be on-site part-time) in order to guide excavation;
· Recording general site notes (“big picture” notes, observations, and interpretations) using a bar code scanner, tablet computer, and camera, supplemented by very limited conventional paper notes;
· Conducting Quality Assessment and Control by regularly reviewing records and notes made by junior staff, and checking that stratigraphy is being properly identified, recorded, and excavated;
· Liaising with representatives of local First Nations or regulators, including giving occasional tours of the archaeological work.
· Ensuring that all data transfer and backup protocols are being followed.
Other requirements of the job:

- Canadian citizenship or valid Canadian work permit
- following Millennia’s Employee Handbook policies and procedures.
- commitment to safety and following all rules and procedures as required including the Millennia Safety Handbook and the project Safety Plan
- adherence to the BCAPA Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
- ability to work flexible hours (i.e., short-notice shortened or extended hours). Weather may cancel or delay the start of work or require a work day to end early.
- Possess suitable field clothing (excellent rain gear) and PPE not supplied by the company (e.g., steel-toe boots may be required for some tasks).
These are the following required qualifications for the position:
· MA or PhD in Archaeology or Anthropology with Archaeology specialty, or BA supplemented by extensive field experience.
· Prior considerable experience in archaeological shell midden excavation.
· Professional Member in good standing of BC Association of Professional Archaeologists (or recent applicant).
· Class 5 or higher valid driver’s licence.
· Proven ability to direct a moderate to large project to a successful conclusion.
· Excellent knowledge of Northwest Coast regional literature and schools of thought.
The following will be advantageous for the applicant;
· Level 1 or higher First Aid valid certification.
· Good knowledge of Northern Northwest Coast sub-regional archaeological literature (a required reading list in preparation for the job will be provided for those without this background).
· Experience with human burial excavation and understanding of importance of culturally appropriate handling and treatment.
A compensation package for these positions will be negotiated with the successful applicant(s). Wages are paid bi-weekly. Shared accommodations will be provided, one person per bedroom. Modest per diems to cover groceries are given. Transportation from Victoria or the Lower Mainland to Prince Rupert will be provided at the beginning and end of the project, and there will be options for additional occasional trips to these centres.
