USFS, Carson District

Working collaboratively with the USDA Forest Service Carson District, the Great Basin Institute is recruiting an archeologist to work cooperatively with a team of archeologists to conduct Section 106 surveys in relation to fuels reduction work. Section 106 surveys are strictly to gather information on what types of sites are located throughout the Humboldt-Toiyabe Forest, Carson District. Survey work will involve intensive ground surveys over a variety of terrains and in a variety of weather conditions; some remote areas may require overnight camping. All new survey sites will be recorded using the Nevada IMACS forms. In addition, the team will create site maps that contain clear, concise and detailed information so that the sites can be relocated, will complete and submit all required site paperwork including data forms and site reports.

* AmeriCorps Education Award may be used for past, present or future education experiences, including payment of qualifying federal student loans. Loan forbearance and accrued interest payment on qualifying student loans is also available.

o June 25, 2012  - September 28, 2012, with potential for extension pending funding and positive performance review
o Full time, 40+ hours per week
Working out of the Carson District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe Forest, field surveys will be conducted in Little Valley and Genoa, NV.

Technical requirements:
o Educational and field experience related to archeology or anthropology;
o Experience and understanding of the proper steps required to conduct and assess the condition of archeological site surveys (e.g.: mapping, data recording, site photography, GPSing, figuring out location of and routes in to and out of survey site, and drawing artifacts or structures as needed);
o Experience operating hand-held GPS units for navigation and electronic field data collection (previous experience operating Trimble units is a plus);
o Experience preparing, reviewing, and documenting data collected during archeological fieldwork;
o Ability to read and interpret topographic maps and navigate using a compass;
o Previous experience conducting Section 110 field surveys –or– working with the U.S. Forest Service –or– working in the Great Basin is desirable but not required.

Additional requirements:
o Ability to work productively and cooperatively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals and communicate effectively with a diverse public;
o Have good organizational skills and balance competing tasks;
o Flexibility and capability to meet the demands of rapidly changing plans and schedules;
o Possess a valid, state-issued drivers license and clean driving record;
o Experience operating 4WD trucks on- and off-road, including narrow and steep forest roads, and conducting routine vehicle maintenance;
o Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, carry upwards of 40 pounds in a backpack, and otherwise be in good physical condition;
o Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, and (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of two in a lifetime, regardless of award amount).
