SWCA Environmental Consultants is an employee-owned company of environmental professionals who specialize in natural and cultural resource management, environmental planning, and regulatory compliance.
We are seeking Cultural Resources Field Managers (field directors/crew chiefs) for the Cultural Resources Program of our Salt Lake City, Utah office. Individuals must have enough Great Basin field experience to be permitted by the Utah BLM; individuals with previous field supervisory experience will be considered first. The selected candidates will direct fieldwork and the work of other crew members under the supervision of a Project Manager and Principal Investigator. These are temporary, hourly, seasonal positions. Pay rate will be based on individual qualifications and experience.
Responsibilities:
Ensure that all necessary equipment, supplies, and forms are collected and used appropriately in the field and properly checked-in at the office
Ensure that client and SWCA safety procedures are followed in the field, and make safety calls in the field depending on weather and other extreme conditions
Ensure that the project scope of work is followed
Ensure that all forms and other project data are collected and downloaded daily, and perform QA/QC checks of all the project data
Track fieldwork on a daily basis while in the field by completing tracking sheets and daily logs
Delegate tasks to members of the crew under the direction of the Project Manager (PM)/Principal Investigator (PI) and follow up on delegated tasks
Communicate with all crew members regarding field schedule and project requirements
Organize crew and assign crew members to specific field tasks
Evaluate sites for NRHP eligibility and make preliminary NRHP eligibility calls while in the field
Collect, organize, and conduct QA/QC on paperwork from crew lead(s) and crew on a daily basis
Meet with and/or communicate with the client or agency representative in a professional manner under the direction of the PM
Coordinate project GIS requests before fieldwork and upon returning to the office
Communicate needs and progress of technicians to appropriate staff (i.e., Program Coordinator)
Provides assistance and guidance to crew as to company policy and procedures
Ensure that the crew has sufficient training for the applicable tasks and conduct informal in-field training when necessary (and when project budget allows)
Identify instances when company procedures are not being followed and determine the cause
Effectively oversee crew and communicate with individual technician's supervisor when the need arises
Comply with and implement SWCA company procedures
Conduct archaeological survey and site recording
Identify artifacts and perform basic artifact documentation
Take appropriate site and artifact photographs
Collect GPS data
Care for and track equipment and vehicles assigned to employee
Fill out required data forms accurately and legibly
Track personal progress and daily paperwork
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field and completion of an archaeological field school required; Master's degree preferred
Great Basin field experience and qualification for the Utah BLM permit required
Ability to work long hours in extreme weather conditions
Ability to successfully pass a SWCA-conducted background screen
Ability to work as a member of a team and follow instructions from supervisors
Ability to work well with others with a good attitude
Ability to direct archaeological survey and site recording
Ability to distinguish artifacts from non-artifacts, and ability to identify specific artifact types (debitage, point types, ground stone, etc.)
Ability to accurately record data in the field
