[phono-tx] Re:Signing and emergent language

Aubrey,

Yes, indeed I totally agree with you. For any family to take on any of the AAC's out there is a huge undertaking and not everyone is able or willing to do this. There is also a great deal of stigma attached to signing. Back in 2005, the UK government produced an Information for Parents booklet on Speech & Language Difficulties in the early years and they published a quote from myself in there about signing.

The difficulties are compounded when you add in the strong emotions that any parent will be feeling after they have just been told that their child may never achieve 'normal' speech & language. Taking on an AAC at this point may be just too overwhelming.

I take your point that close observation over a period of time will show how a child is developing and the levels of frustration that the child is experiencing. This will then enable prioritorisation of limited resources.

I will just add that we have been very lucky since my daughter was diagnosed in being given priority over the years for local speech therapy services and my daughter has benefited hugely. Her progress has been amazing, although as you would probably expect there are still many difficulties.

Kind regards,

Mary
