RE: [phono-tx] Re:Signing and emergent language

I have several cases of severe oral apraxia or language disorder where
Makaton (I am in UK) has been real boon to both school and home
communication until about 6years of age in typical cognition children and
longer in children with cognitive learning difficulties. I would not
particularly say it was needed in children who have any oral communication
but schools here do use it as standard before the age of six for basic needs
and songs etc. There are tv programmes that use it and ofcourse signed (BSL)
interpretation of others as children get older. I have never been able to
develop beyond 2 word level use though with Makaton, nothing like true BSL
but most children with apraxia move on to other electronic AAC rather than
learn that.

Kind Regards
Hilary

As the Mother of a child now 12 who at 3 was diagnosed with severe verbal &
oral dyspraxia with no language, I was advised to implement an AAC of some
sort. I started with Signalong and I can asure you that I signed fully with
my daughter - she responded with great enthusiasm, clearly relieved to have
found a way to communicate with me & the rest of the family. It was a
liberation for us all.
