[phono-tx] Re: all about speech homework

Dear Caroline,

Speaking as a parent of a child who at 3 was diagnosed with severe oral & verbal dyspraxia and who is now 12, I have many years of experience carrying out homework with my daughter.

The speech therapists working with my daughter, provided me with alot of information about her condition and within that were a number of references to how important it was for parents to carry out the homework. I also researched myself and again there were alot of references to the importance of homework.

We followed the Nuffield Programme and I was asked to carry out sound work 3 times a day and oral exercises once a day for about 10mins each time. We were lucky in that my daughter was very compliant and she was always happy to do the exercises. When she went to school, the exercises were done once a day by her support assistant who always allowed her to chose a partner from her class to join her as she had to be withdrawn. I continued the exercises at home. At one point we were given minimal pairs exercises to do - these were a disaster, my daughter would not do them.

Over the years I have implemented various other interventions including computer based interventions and I have had to get more creative with the rewards - certainly now she is far from compliant and it is best now to do speech therapy little & often, but only once a day! Currently we are using a system called POPAT.

My son also needed some intervention for his mild verbal dyspraxia - he was completely different and again I had to be very creative - e.g. rolling out lengths of wallpaper and making a jumping exercise for consonant blends.

All the hard work has paid off, but I will stress that it can be very hard work for parents to carry out homework especially at the level required for children with severe difficulties.

Hope this helps

Mary
