FIELD TECHNICIAN
TRIBAL HISTORICAL PRESERVATION OFFICE
NATURE OF WORK
This is specialized work in the development of the historic preservation program for the
. STOF Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum
Responsibilities consist of archaeological fieldwork, including excavation, field data collection and data recording. Some laboratory work involving artifact processing may also be required. This position reports to the Deputy Tribal Historic Preservation Officer and is a non-exempt position.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
The listed duties are only illustrative and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed by this position. The omission of specific statements does not preclude management from assigning specific duties not listed, if such duties are a logical assignment to the position.
Performs systematic investigation of possible archeological sites using accurate mapping techniques and established field recording methods. Interprets data using topographic maps and aerial photographs. Establishes site boundaries by accepted archaeological methodology and includes shovel testing at prescribed intervals, generally to a depth of a meter and passing the excavated soil through hardware cloth screens made for the purpose.
Will assist in the location and excavation of cultural resources located on the reservations and lands of the STOF. This will be done in a manner that will meet or exceed professional standards and guidelines.
Will assist in the identification, recording and mapping of archaeological sites. Will participate in field analysis of cultural and historical fact- finding projects.
May participate in archeological laboratory activities such as record-keeping and processing of field specimens including; cleaning, counting and cataloging of artifacts and ecofacts.
May participate in activities to reconstruct and preserve artifacts such as ceramic pottery shards.
Assists crew members at the site in a range of routine archeological and associated tasks.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Basic knowledge of Seminole culture and history.
- Ability to collect field data and accurately record findings.
- Knowledge of mapping principles and techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret topographic maps and aerial photographs.
- Ability to collect field data and accurately record findings. Knowledge of general excavation techniques, tools and equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of archeological field and/or laboratory procedures and techniques.
- Ability to serve the Tribal community, the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the STOF tribal community, general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Position requires: a) Excavating and collecting field data and assisting in the recording of findings; b) packing and transporting artifacts and samples; and c) cleaning, sorting and cataloging artifacts and samples in the laboratory.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree or Master's in Anthropology/History or related field. Previous related work experience suggested. Excellent English oral and written communication skills. Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and holidays.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES
Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing or pulling of objects up to 50 pounds. Physical work is a primary part of the job (more than 70%).
WORKING CONDITIONS
Archaeological fieldwork will generally consist of heavy physical labor outside under typical southern
conditions including extreme heat, rain, humidity, and other conditions prevalent in the swampy lands of the region. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. Florida
