Black Rock NCA Historic Trails Intern


Description:

In cooperation with the BLM Winnemucca District Black Rock NCA, the Great Basin Institute is recruiting an AmeriCorps intern interested in support activities related to the management of historic trails within the Black Rock NCA. In addition to working with local groups in the area dedicated to the protection and preservation of historic trails, the intern will assist BLM Archaeology staff monitor conditions along the Applegate-Lassen Trail, to identify and record unmapped segments of the trail and to assist in the maintenance and updating of historic trails maps and records.  Other duties will involve participation in public events and public interpretation.

 

While this internship is focused primarily on cultural resource aspects of land management, the intern may also have the opportunity to assist with other recreation and natural resource management efforts on the District. This opportunity is available to youth between the ages of 18 and 25.

 

 

 Compensation:  

  • $10,350 Living Stipend
  • $2,675 AmeriCorps Education Award*
  • Student loan forbearance*
  • Field per diem 

 * AmeriCorps Education Award may be used for past, present or future education experiences, including payment of qualified student loans.


 Timeline: 

  • May 09, 2011 (or upon availability) – October 28, 2011
  • Full time, minimum 40 hours per week
  • Working weekends will often be required

 

Location:

  • The intern will be based at the BLM Winnemucca District Office in Winnemucca, NV, which is located roughly 200 miles east of Reno, NV, as well as at the Black Rock Station, an administrative facility which is located at the southern edge of the Black Rock NCA and is roughly 100 miles from both Winnemucca and Reno.


Qualifications:

  • Either an undergraduate degree or coursework in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or a closely related field;
  • Experience conducting archaeological field work – experience working in the west, desirable;
  • Experience utilizing hand-held GPS equipment for navigation and data collection;
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS software in order to update maps, highly desirable;
  • Familiarity with technical writing and/or written project reports;
  • Possess a valid, state-issued drivers license and clean driving record;
  • Experience operating 4WD trucks in an on and off paved roads;
  • Ability to work productively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse public;
  • Possess good organizational skills;
  • Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, carry upwards of 40 pounds in a backpack, and otherwise maintain good physical condition;
  • Willingness to camp, sometimes in remote areas, up to three night per week; and
  • Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime or equivalent of 2 full-time awards), and (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and federal criminal background checks.
