Archaeological Technician
Description:
The Great Basin Institute is recruiting an Archaeological Technician to work as part of a two-person archaeology team that will assess abandoned mining properties on lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management in Nevada under a cooperative agreement with the BLM Nevada Abandoned Mineral Lands (AML) Program. The Archaeology team conducts assessments of cultural resources that will be impacted by permanently closing mine hazards to protect people, pets, stock, and wildlife. Extensive travel within the state is required for this position. The team often works an 8 days-on/6-off schedule and may camp in the field up to 6 nights per field session. At least 2 of the 8 working days are generally spent in the Reno office, and sometimes entire work sessions are devoted to map, record, and report preparation, which will provide the successful applicant a broad range of experience in a short amount of time.
Compensation:
o Living Allowance: $8,100 - $10,800, depending on length of service
o AmeriCorps Education Award: $1,800 - $2,362.50, depending on length of service

Timeline:
o August 2011 (or upon availability) through November 2011, with potential for extension pending positive performance review
o Full time, 40 hours per week
Location:
o This position will be based out of GBI's Reno, NV headquarters. Project work may be in one or more of Nevada's 17 counties. Field locations are on land managed by the BLM in Nevada. BLM administers nearly 48 million acres of public land making up about 67 percent of Nevada's land base. Field conditions are typical of Great Basin and Mojave Desert topography, geology, climate, and ecosystems.
Qualifications:
Technical requirements:
o Educational experience involving successful completion of a minimum of six hours of college-level coursework in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field; archaeological field school highly desirable;
o Experience in archaeological site inventory methods and recording (e.g., mapping, artifact recording, site photography, using a GPS unit for recording features and artifact locations, and drawing artifacts or structures) previous experience working in the west and/or Great Basin highly desirable;
o Experience operating hand-held GPS units for navigation and data collection;
o Ability to create area and site maps using ArcGIS software; and
o Ability to read topographical maps and navigate using a compass.
Additional requirements:
o Ability to work productively and cooperatively as part of a team to accomplish mutual goals and communicate effectively with a diverse public;
o Good organizational skills and ability to balance competing tasks;
o Flexibility to meet the demands of rapidly changing plans and schedules;
o Possesses a valid, state-issued drivers license and clean driving record;
o Experience operating 4WD trucks on- and off-road, including narrow and steep roads or sandy washes, and conducting routine vehicle maintenance;
o Ability to learn and apply techniques for safely working around AML sites;
o Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, work in all types of weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, carry upwards of 40 pounds in a backpack, and otherwise maintain good physical condition;
o Ability and willingness to climb very steep slopes, and must
o Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of two in a lifetime, regardless of award amount), and (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and federal criminal background checks.
