[ShovelBums.Org] Archaeological Laboratory Technician - James Madison's Montpelier, VA

The Montpelier Foundation is seeking applications for a full-time archaeological laboratory assistant position with benefits (health insurance, retirement, holiday, vacation, and sick leave).  The position is provisionally for one year, with extension beyond this dependent upon the acquisition of further grants.

Over the next two seasons we will be conducting excavations at several early 19th-century slave quarter sites.  The excavation and analysis of these sites is part of a larger NEH-funded project to examine the enslaved community at Montpelier and include an important teaching component with the research program (university field schools and multiple week-long adult training programs).  During these programs, the successful candidate will take an active role in teaching field school students and volunteers in laboratory methods and protocols while also maintaining a rigorous work schedule.

The successful candidate should be experienced in identifying and cataloging 18th and 19th-century material culture, laboratory methods and protocols, conservation of iron and other artifacts, and be able to contribute to interpretive spaces and displays.  They would also have taken an historical archaeology field school and be familiar with field methodologies, with additional experience in the field a plus.

An important component of this position is maintaining the archaeology laboratory as a visitor space.  Successful applicants will need to work a Wednesday through Sunday schedule and, under the supervision of the laboratory director, interact with the public and work with students, interns, and volunteers.

For applications, please send a cover letter detailing your level of archaeological experience as it pertains to identification, cataloguing and conservation of of 18th and 19th-century material culture, experience in interacting with the public, a 1-2 page resume, and a list of references.  Candidates should hold a BA or BS in Anthropology or a related field, and be able to effectively communicate archaeological techniques to untrained volunteers and students.  Applications need to be received by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, 31st March.  Rental housing is available at Montpelier, and is shared with other archaeological staff.  Salary is $12.00 per hour with a $1.00 raise after a six-month review.  While this announcement does have a deadline, positions will be filled as suitable applicants are found.

Send applicable materials to Dr. Matthew Reeves, Director of Archaeology, Montpelier Foundation, P.O. Box 911, Orange, Virginia.  Dr. Reeves can also be reached on (540) 672-2728 extension 160, by fax at (540) 301-2843, or by email to mreeves@montpelier.org.  Electronic submission of application materials is recommended.

The most important aspect of this list is that it is for one purpose only.: announcing jobs/non paying volunteer postings in the international CRM field at all levels; Field Tech, Professors, SHPO's, etc...  Caveat Emptor though my friends.  Not all jobs pay the same, nor is their treatment of employees the same - as the companies are checking your references, you should also check them out - make sure they pay fair wages, treat their employees professionally, and do quality work.  If you have at least a BA you deserve fair remuneration, so ask for it, and in turn you provide your employer with excellent service.   You ARE a trained professional, NOT a "shovelbum"  - the name is in jest - act professional, expect to be treated like one.
