[ShovelBums.Org] Full-Time Ceramic Analyst, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

 

The Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS), a Division of the Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, is seeking a ceramic analyst at its Champaign, Illinois Offices. Ceramic Analysts are responsible for conducting analyses of prehistoric ceramic assemblages from archaeological sites. Duties include all aspects of the identification, analysis, archaeological interpretation, report

preparation, and curation of said assemblages. They carry out the identification and recordation of prehistoric ceramic assemblages from archaeological sites, including the quantification of results and preparation of appropriate tables, analyses and interpretation of their archaeological significance, maintain databases, manage ceramic materials under analysis, and assist in their curation. Maintain

communication with colleagues in the region and keep abreast of relevant research and developments in the field of Illinois archaeology and prehistoric ceramic technologies.

 

The successful candidate must have a BA in Anthropology or related field, plus 36 months experience in conducting ceramic investigations at prehistoric sites in the Eastern Woodlands cultural area and a demonstrated ability to design and complete ceramic analyses and reports in a timely and competent manner. Must have a basic familiarity with computer word processing, graphic, and database programs. Basic familiarity with Eastern Woodlands archaeological culture history, with Illinois prehistoric cultures, with an emphasis on pottery use, styles, and manufacture and with ceramic analytical procedures, e.g., creating rim profiles, recognizing tempering agents and vessel forms, determining manufacturing methods, regional ceramic typologies, and ceramic statistical measures.

 

This is an academic professional position. Salary is negotiable based on experience. Proposed starting date is as soon as possible after the closing date.
