Position: Experienced Supervisory Archaeologist for Haun & Associates on Hawai'i Island
Haun & Associates seeks an experienced supervisory archaeologist to conduct archaeological survey, data recovery, monitoring, and assessment projects on Hawai'i Island. The ideal candidate will have osteological experience and be physically capable of working in strenuous and challenging environmental conditions, including extensive work in underground lava tubes. The position could require travel, working in remote areas, occasional work away from the home office for extended periods, hiking in steep and rugged terrain over lava flows, and traversing 10 miles a day with a backpack weighing 40 lbs.
Pay rate will be based on individual qualifications and experience, and is highly competitive.
Minimum Qualifications: B.A. in Anthropology or Archaeology and 5 years of professional supervisory experience in field archaeology, preferably in Hawai'i or the Pacific. Primary responsibility is independent and supervisory fieldwork. Must be detail-oriented, highly organized, and demonstrate exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Ancillary responsibilities could include laboratory analysis and report production.
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of Hawaiian archaeological sites and historical background
Skill in navigating difficult terrain with compass, GPS, topographic maps and development plans
Ability to interact with clients, the public and colleagues in a professional and friendly manner
Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel programs
Proficiency with GIS, AutoCAD, lithic and faunal analyses are highly desirable
Responsibilities:
Conduct independent fieldwork and supervise archaeological field crew
Provide concise and accurate field documentation, including forms, drawings, photos and maps
Ability to drive a 4-WD manual truck and obtain a Hawai'i state driver's license
Commitment to safety and leadership
Initiate and participate in problem resolution
Ensure tasks are completed efficiently
Assist with production of archaeological reports as needed
Duties:
Document and evaluate sites
Track status of projects
Maintain fieldwork databases and field equipment
Coordinate field crew and report to senior staff
Prepare and review field documentation for accuracy and completeness
Support senior staff members' work requirements for report production
