[ShovelBums.Org] Two paid intern positions - The Montpelier Foundation

The Montpelier Foundation is seeking applications for two paid intern positions. Over the next
two seasons we will be conducting excavations at several early 19th-century slave quarter sites.
The excavation and analysis of these sites is part of a larger NEH funded project to examine
the enslaved community at Montpelier and include an important teaching component with the
research program (university field schools and multiple week-long adult training programs).
During these programs, interns will take an active role in teaching field school students and
volunteers archaeological techniques while maintaining a rigorous work schedule and the highest
standards of record keeping.

Early 19th-century Quarter for Enslaved Domestics (2011)

Excavation of slave quarters located within the yard of the Montpelier mansion. The site was
abandoned in the 1844 following the Madison sale of Montpelier and remained as unplowed
lawns for the mansion throughout the late-19th and 20th centuries. As a result, this site contains
excellent stratigraphic preservation.

Early 19th-century Quarter for Enslaved Field Workers (2012)

Excavation of a set of slave quarters below the Montpelier Visitor Center. Similar to the quarters
for enslaved domestics, these quarters were abandoned in 1844 but these structures were allowed
to decay in place—resulting in an incredible array of abandonment strata and intact occupation
strata. In addition, this set of quarters has never been plowed.

Survey of Freedman's Farm and Civil War Camps

We will be continuing surveys of a late-19th-century freedman's farm and Civil War
encampments during the winter months. These investigations will involve Phase I and limited
Phase II investigations.

For applications, please send a cover letter detailing your level of archaeological experience as it
applies to 18th and 19th-century archaeological sites and the identification of historical material
culture, a resume, and a list of references. The successful candidate should have participated
in a recognized archaeological field school, and at least 2-3 months of archaeological field or
laboratory experience, and demonstrate their ability to deal with the public.

The intern position provides a stipend of $250 per week plus free housing.

Applications need to be received by March 12, 2011, via email (with e-mail being the
preferred method). While this announcement may have a deadline, positions will be filled as
suitable applicants are found. Send applicable materials to Dr. Matthew Reeves, Director of
Archaeology, by email to mreeves@montpelier.org mreeves - at -  montpelier org

The most important aspect of this list is that it is for one purpose only.: announcing jobs/non paying volunteer postings in the international CRM field at all levels; Field Tech, Professors, SHPO's, etc...  Caveat Emptor though my friends.  Not all jobs pay the same, nor is their treatment of employees the same - as the companies are checking your references, you should also check them out - make sure they pay fair wages, treat their employees professionally, and do quality work.  If you have at least a BA you deserve fair remuneration, so ask for it, and in turn you provide your employer with excellent service.   You ARE a trained professional, NOT a "shovelbum"  - the name is in jest - act professional, expect to be treated like one.
